At times it is easy to forget that Manhattan is an island and sailing is part of its history and culture. As an avid sailor, my youth was spent growing up in New York City and revolved around sailing, boatyards, and sail lofts. This is why Battery Park, being a maritime hub, with the sights and sounds of a working waterfront feels like home. The presence of ferries, work boats and enhance the notion that New York is the third largest seaport in the United States.

North Cove Marina is a waterfront mecca, a treasure which offers public access to the waterfront and incredible views of the Hudson. Manhattan Yacht Club (now based at Liberty Landing, a short ride by boat), has a sailing school, clubhouse, two 12-meter yachts and four International One Design yachts in its fleet. These magnificent boats are pure grace under sail. On a summer evening stroll through Battery Park watching them race reminds one of New York's great sailing history. The Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series that took place in May 2016 and is a big part of NYC’s sailing history. This international yacht race showcased competing catamarans from around the globe traveling at 40 miles an hour. All races finished just off the foreshore in front of the esplanade.

The soaring architecture is post-modern, engineered to take advantage of the views. It’s important to note the first green residential building in the United States, as well as the first residential high-rise building in New York City to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, was designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and completed in 2003. It has been described as an "environmentally-progressive residential tower" and is sited here in Battery Park.
