Westport, CT —
Something for Everyone

Westport is a destination town full of activity. Whether you're a foodie, an athlete, adventure-seeker, or anything in between, there is something for everyone.

3 Things for Foodies....

The Westport Farmer's Market outside at 50 Imperial Avenue from mid-May through Early November on Thursday's from 10 AM -2 PM. It moves inside to Gilberties Greenhouse on Sylvan Avenue on Saturdays 10 AM -2 PM when it is cold outside). You’ll find free music, chef-prepared lunches, organic food trucks and shopping for the freshest organic goods all on the banks of the Saugatuck River.

The Revival of Saugatuck, which has seen a renaissance recently and become a foodie destination for every day with dozens of new restaurants and retail. Something new is opening almost every month. All of this compliments the robust retail and restaurant scene already established in downtown Westport.

The A Slice of Saugatuck (2nd Saturday in September) and the Blues & Views BBQ (Labor Day Weekend) food festivals let it be known that Westport is a "Foodie Destination".

3 Things for Athletes....

Westport Road Runners Saturday Morning Summer Series, 10 races of progressively longer distances starting every Saturday morning at 8:00 A.M

Cedar Point Yacht Club at the end of Bluff Point Road on the ethereally beautiful Saugatuck Island. It is a welcoming and down to earth yacht club for serious sailors of all ages. Memberships are very reasonable at this jewel of a club! The main requirement of members is you have to be passionate about sailing!!

Town-owned Longshore Country Club is for golfers, sailors, tennis players, swimmers, kayakers, motor boaters, paddle tennis players, ice skaters and more. Managed by Westport Parks and Recreations, living in town means you are a member and can sign up for a variety of lessons, leagues, and ladders. Relax and enjoy lunch, dinner or drinks afterwards at the attached and public Pearl Restaurant.

"Some have said it's better than Broadway."

3 Special Events....

The Staples High School Orphenians' A Capella Choir, Candlelight Holiday Concert (Which is transcendent and purely beautiful!) Any play by the Staples Players. Some have said it's better than Broadway.

Westport First Night Fireworks, a family-fun-day full of friendly activities all around town on the last day of each year. It culminates with a fireworks launched from a barge on the Saugatuck River and its best viewed from the Riverwalk or from the town bridge.

The 4th of July Fireworks at Compo Beach. Be sure to arrive early to claim your piece of the beach with all of your neighbors and watch the most spectacular fireworks of the year.

The Memorial Day Parade honoring our veterans includes marching bands, classic cars, cute Little Leaguers and local politicians. The whole town turns out for the classic All-American fun!

3 of my Favorite Free Things…

Begin the day with a 4 mile walk/run around the Saugatuck River which runs through the heart downtown Westport and flows to the Saugatuck section of town. Along this route there are several riverside pocket parks and beautiful public access walkway with a boardwalk suspended over the river to enjoy the views of wildlife and athletes, kayaking, paddle boarding, running, walking, boating on and around the Saugatuck River. Starting downtown on the "town bridge" (named the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge), dozens of American flags will be flapping in the breeze and you will cross the river the first time. Head up Riverside Avenue past the William Raveis Westport office on your left and you will see herons, egrets, seagulls and swans. Crossing the river the second time on the "Bridge Street Bridge" (named the William F. Cribari Bridge) you’ll witness world class athletes from the Saugatuck Rowing Club out for an early morning row. Sometimes there’s a yoga class being held on stand up paddle boards and hosted by Down Under Yoga Studio. Head back up Imperial Ave toward downtown and finally end your morning walk on the Jeff Shoup River Walk behind Levitt Pavilion for a final serene look at the Saugatuck River.

"...you’ll witness world class athletes from the Saugatuck Rowing Club out for an early morning row."

End the day with a Sunset at Compo's South Beach where the most spectacular sunsets happen all year long, but particularly in the late summer and early fall. Come join me and other Westporters who are in-the-know. Bring your beach chair and maybe a picnic, lose the shoes, then add your favorite beverage (mine's a Grapefruit Martini). Now watch the light show as the sun sinks into the Long Island Sound. Golds, oranges and hot pinks all reflecting back in the water of Saugatuck Harbor which is dotted with sailboats moored in the harbor for the night.

Throw in some Music at Levitt Pavillion for the Performing Arts which has free concerts and performances under the stars on the banks of the Saugatuck River all summer long (including a weekly children's' series). Pack a picnic and some cocktails and enjoy amazing music on a summer night or grab the kids and some takeout and enjoy the childrens' series.
