Escape This Summer To Westport

How do you vacation with your family and still log into the office daily? That's Jackie and Sam's dilemma. Both work in Manhattan in executive positions, which require their daily presence. Their three children ages 16, 14 and 10 want to make the most of summer by spending as much time as possible outdoors-- biking, swimming, playing tennis and kayaking. They don't want to go to camp and their parents want to spend time with them daily.

So how do you solve this puzzle? Jackie and Sam had to get creative. As a family, they agreed on the solution! Let's find a comfortable and accessible rental within an hour train ride of Manhattan. That's easily done if you rent a house for the summer in Westport, CT.

The family settled on a spacious four bedroom house with river views and an in-ground pool that is less than two miles from the Westport train station. Jackie and Sam could get to Manhattan daily by train while the kids could pursue their outdoor interests. The Westport Parks and Recreation Department offers programs and activities in boating and sailing, swimming, golf, and tennis. The Longshore Sailing School is one of the best options as it provides public recreational access to Long Island Sound through a variety of programs that include the juniors program for sailing lessons for those 9 to 16 years old, safe boating courses, and the adult sailing program held on weekends. Boat rentals are available for kayaks, sailboats, and paddleboards. The public pool at Longshore has free swim and lessons. Jackie and Sam love to golf and the golf course at Longshore is top notch and within minutes from their rental home.

"Even after a long day at work, Jackie and Sam can spend several hours of daylight to connect with their kids."

On a typical weekday, the family convenes around 7:30pm for a casual dinner either around the pool or in the family room overlooking the Saugatuck River. The kids are tired but invigorated from their day's challenges in boating, tennis and swimming and excitedly share their accomplishments with each other and their parents. Even after a long day at work, Jackie and Sam can spend several hours of daylight to connect with their kids and they often go for a walk together at Compo Beach or walk around Saugatuck for a coffee or ice cream. They can even jump into their kayaks right in front of their home or a paddle on the Saugatuck River. On other nights, they pack up their dinner and lawn chairs to enjoy a picnic on the lawn while listening to one of the 50 free outdoor concerts at the Levitt Pavilion.

Weekends are free for day trips to explore the Connecticut shoreline from Greenwich to Guilford, Essex and Mystic. Being close to Manhattan, they can share their new summer life with friends they invite for barbecues or dinners on Compo Beach. Spending July 4th in Westport is so much fun because you can experience being a part of a small American town with local parades and the famous fireworks on Compo Beach where thousands of people gather to make a night of it.
