Needham Has Every Convenience You Could Desire

Needham is an inclusive community focusing on service, social activities, children’s wellbeing, education and culture. It’s a town that values history and is always at the forefront of forward thinking. It’s a place people move to raise their kids, with great parks, playgrounds, and library programs, a robust sports program, and some of the best public schools in the country. Our neighborhoods are friendly and welcoming. Needham maintains a sense of community and connectedness that is hard to find in today’s fast-paced world, yet offers the finer aspects of modern life, such as access to easy commuting, a plethora of excellent restaurants and the convenience of a well-run and well-maintained town.

Take a hike or bird watch at Ridge Hill Reservation. Launch your kayak or canoe at one of many entry points on the Charles River. You’ll find parks and playgrounds in all parts of Needham, from Perry Park in Birds Hill to Greene’s Field in the town center to DeFazio Field, a gem that hosts a multi-state soccer tournament every Memorial Day weekend. Needham has a tradition of welcoming newcomers and encouraging them to work together, and over the years this tradition has contributed to the growth of families, friendships, and neighborhoods.

We have several independent service and social groups that provide ample opportunities to keep a family connected and involved in the community from infancy through retirement. For many years the local Exchange Club has been putting on the best 4th of July fireworks display and parade for miles around, an event anticipated and attended by throngs of locals of all ages every year. Another favorite Needham event is the Holiday House Tour, put on by the Women’s Club, who also organize a semi-annual Garden Tour and a Santa Visit among other projects to raise funds for their charitable endeavors. For parents of young children, Needham’s Parent Talk organization offers even more ways to connect and volunteer in the community, from Flicks on the Field outdoor movie night to the Parent Talk Biannual Used Toy and Clothing Sale, as well as a myriad of family friendly volunteer events, an online blog and forum, and retail discounts for members. For the kids we have a Football Boosters Club, a Soccer Club, St Joe's basketball for grade school kids, theater groups and Plugged In for young thespians and musicians and each school has a Parent-Teachers Council.

"Most recently the town appropriated funds to build a new elementary school, named for Sunita Williams, an astronaut who grew up in Needham."

There are ample opportunities for residents to get involved in their local government. One notable recent project that received funding and support from the community is the expansion and restoration of the historic Needham Town Hall that culminated in the reopening of Powers Hall. This wonderful space has been the home of a concert series that has featured such entertainers as Tom Rush and Judy Collins. The hall is also used for the benefit of many town wide organizations by showcasing their programs and projects.

The public schools are supported by active, strong parent participation. We love our schools and over the past 20 years have brought in the latest technology and created new and better facilities. Most recently the town appropriated funds to build a new elementary school, named for Sunita Williams, an astronaut who grew up in Needham and attended the public schools. Our schools have active student programs where students can participate in a variety of art, music and theater groups in addition to the multiple school sports programs.

"This is a public outdoor pool built into Rosemary Lake."

On top of all this, Needham is located just seven miles west of Boston, right off Route 128 or Route 9, and has its own commuter rail line with four separate stops in town. But once you’re home, it’s likely you’ll find little reason to leave; Needham has every convenience you could desire, often within walking distance of the town center. Enjoy sushi at Fuji Steak House, gourmet Italian at Sweet Basil, or sample the unparalleled Indian lunch buffet at Masala Art. Build a cupcake at Treat, or sample some frozen custard at Abbott’s for dessert. Visit Volantes Farm for some farm fresh veggies, an ice cream cone, or something from their incredible bakery and deli.
